Roadside assistance worker urges drivers to "move over, slow down" for emergency crews

Posted: Updated:

Wednesday is expected to be the busiest day of travel. With the high number of drivers on the road and highways, it's likely to be a busy day for roadside assistance workers.

“It can be pretty scary out there, " said AAA Fleet Supervisor Jon Burgett. He's been with roadside assistance for about nine years. Burgett said he's experiences close calls while responding to accidents on the side of the highway.

"You’re climbing in, and somebody buses you right on the side of your door," Burgett said.

On average, every two weeks a driver hits and kills a roadside assistance worker.

Especially during the busy holiday travel, Burgett and other AAA officials are urging drivers to move over or slow down for all emergency responders.

“I understand It might cost you an extra 15 seconds, but 15 seconds is a whole lot better than taking a life," said Burgett, "If everybody just stays over and gives all first responders that room to work, everybody can go home.”
