I-70 reopens in NW Kansas

KDOT has reopened I-70 in both directions from Hays to the Colorado Border. Additionally, U.S. 40 from Oakley to the Colorado border has reopened. 

Drivers are warned that roads may still be snowpacked and icy in areas. Please use caution when traveling. 

4:30 p.m. 

The Kansas Department of Transportation says westbound I-70 is now closed at Hays and both directions are closed from Colby to the Colorado state line.

Forecasters said that snow parts of northwest Kansas was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour Tuesday afternoon, and near blizzard conditions were possible. Travel in that part of the state is not advised.

The following routes also remain closed:

  • U.S. 24 from Colby to Levant
  • U.S. 36 from Atwood to Colorado 
  • U.S. 40 from Oakley to Colorado 
  • K-27 from Sharon Springs to Nebraska 
  • K-161 from Bird City to Nebraska 

Interstate 70 was also closed between the Colorado state line and Denver.

I-70 from Oakley to the Colorado Border has now been closed due to winter weather conditions. 

3:30 p.m. 

In addition to I-70 in northwest Kansas being closed from Colby to the Colorado state line, authorities have shut down sections of U.S. 24 and U.S. 36.

The Kansas Department of Transportation said Tuesday afternoon that snow parts of northwest Kansas was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour, and near blizzard conditions were possible. 

1:30 p.m. 

Interstate 70 has been closed from Colby in northwest Kansas all the way to Denver, Colorado, due to winter weather pounding the region. 

The Kansas Department of Transportation announced the updated closure early Tuesday afternoon. The department urged drivers to avoid travel if possible as conditions worsen.

The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings for nine Kansas counties and winter weather advisories for several more. Forecasters predicted accumulations of 5 to 10 inches.

Elsewhere, more than 2 feet (60 centimeters) of snow had fallen in northern Colorado and about a foot (30 centimeters) fell in southern parts of Wyoming by midmorning.

11:20 a.m. 

The Kansas Department of Transportation has closed westbound Interstate 70 from Goodland to the Colorado state line.

With a closure of I-70 in Colorado early Tuesday morning, that means the interstate is closed from Goodland to Denver.

Winter weather affecting travel into northwest Kansas.

Authorities in Colorado closed Interstate 70 around 5:45 a.m. Tuesday from Denver to the Kansas state line.

Some roads in northwest Kansas are completely covered in snow. Authorities are recommending changing your route if you are traveling through this part of the state, and give yourself some extra time.
