WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Police have identified a 28-year-old woman who was allegedly stabbed to death by her roommate in south Wichita.

Officers responded at around 4:10 a.m. Saturday to a domestic call at a home near Pawnee and Washington. Capt. Brent Allred said there was a verbal disturbance between Devin Cook and her roommate, 44-year-old Jason McCaleb.

"No crime had been committed on that initial call," Allred said. "Officers then left the residence and physical disturbance ensued between McCaleb and Cook."

Officers returned and arrested McCaleb as he exited the home. They entered the home to find Cook had been stabbed multiple times. She was rushed to a local hospital where she later died.

Jason McCaleb was booked for first-degree murder. He was held Monday on $500,000 bond.

Allred said McCaleb allowed Cook to live at the home for about a month and McCaleb wanted her out.

"That was the initial call there, where he wanted her removed from that residence. However, since she established residency there, officers determined they could not remove her from the home."

Allred said there are processes for removing someone from a home that include evictions and protection orders, "which this individual was informed to go get if her wanted her removed from the residence."

McCaleb has prior drug convictions from the late 90s, according to Kansas Department of Corrections records.

A GoFundMe account has been created to help with Cook's funeral expenses. Her death was Wichita's 28th criminal homicide of 2019.
