WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

A woman has died after officials responded to a house fire near Riverside late Sunday night.

Crews responded at around 11:30 p.m. to a fire in the 2000 block of North Jackson, near 19th and Waco. Capt. Chad Winton with the Wichita Fire Department said crews found fire inside a room of the home and a person not breathing.

Paramedics tried to save the person but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name was not released.

A fire department spokesperson said the fire originated in the laundry room. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Jacqueline Ponce is the victim's niece, she reflects on the last conversation they had just a few days ago.

"She just said she loves me and to take care of myself and to keep my head up...I don't know if she knew something was happening or something would happen to her."

Ponce says the woman was loving and kind.
