Ark City teen dies after being critically injured in weekend shooting

ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. (KAKE/ KSOK-NewsCow) -

A teen from Arkansas City who was critically injured in a shooting incident last weekend has died.

KSOK-NewsCow reports 17-year-old Jonathan Szymoniak passed away just before 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, according to the teen's mother. 

Szymoniak's mother told KSOK-NewsCow that the teen's 19-year-old stepbrother accidentally shot him with a handgun at their residence. The bullet allegedly struck a cell phone Jonathan was using and hit him in the jaw. 

Jonathan Szymoniak was going to be a father later this month.

A teen is in critical condition after a shooting in south Arkansas City.

The Arkansas City Police Department says the incident happened just after 9:45 p.m. on Saturday. Emergency crews responded shooting call in the 500 block of South D Street. 

Upon arrival, a 17-year-old male victim was located with a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a local hospital and later airlifted to a Wichita-area hospital for treatment.

No charges have been filed at this time but the investigation is ongoing.
