CHICAGO (KAKE) -

Chicago police say a suspect is in custody after a man was shot and killed while trying to stop the sexual assault of his niece.

WLS reports the incident happened Thursday night when police said the suspect entered a home through a window. Police said he then sexually assaulted a 17-year-old girl in her bedroom.

The victim's 66-year-old uncle heard her screaming and went to help her. Police say that's when the attacker shot him the head and back.

The uncle, identified as James Lewis, was pronounced dead at a local hospital. His niece was hospitalized in stable condition.

Police say they arrested the 25-year-old suspect who was fleeing the scene. Charges are pending, and the suspect's name was not released.
