KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KAKE) -

An attorney in Kansas City, Kansas says her family members were among the women and children killed in the massacre of nine people on the Mexican side of the border with the United States.

Denise LeBaron Ramos told KCTV that they all grew up in a small community in northern Mexico and that the victims had just left their homes and were on their way to a wedding.

Three women, four small children and two infants -- all dual US-Mexican citizens -- were killed. The victims and eight surviving children were ambushed by criminal groups Monday evening while traveling between the states of Sonora and Chihuahua, Mexican authorities said.

“One of my aunts, who was half a kilometer away when it happened, put it on the group. ‘There's been something horrible, something's going on. There's shooting going on and the vehicles on fire and it's exploding. Something's going on. Get somebody over here. Get the men here,’” LeBaron Ramos told the CBS affiliate in Kansas City. “That's how we found out and then it just message after message after message coming in.”

LeBaron Ramos, an immigration lawyer, didn't name her family members.

CNN reports authorities have arrested a suspect in the attack.

The suspect was holding two bound-and-gagged hostages in the hills of Agua Prieta in Sonora state, the ministerial Agency for Criminal Investigations (AMIC) said.

The suspect had several rifles and a large amount of ammunition, including a number of large-caliber weapons, the agency said in a statement posted to its official Facebook page.
