WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Wichita State hosts Omaha Tuesday in the Shockers' season opener, and when the Mavericks take the court it will be a homecoming for one of their star players.

Wichita native Matt Pile is coming off a great sophomore season at Omaha. He averaged 11.2 points and pulled down 7.9 boards last year, and he started in every game.

Pile's success is no surprise from those here in the area. At Eisenhower High School he was named Mr. Kansas Basketball and won the Barry Sanders Male Athlete of the Year award.

"To be honest, I never got my staff as enthused about recruiting Matt as I was. I've watched him now and he's a really good player. It's possible that we made a mistake. He pursues the basketball and that's what I saw. I love ball-getters," said Gregg Marshall. "He's got great pursuit of the ball, looks like he has strong hands, no fear, deceptively athletic. 6-8 and a good player. He's got our full and undivided attention tomorrow."

"I think he's a key. You can't let him just get his 12 rebounds and go off for 20 points," said Marshall.
