WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

A Wichita man has been sentenced to jail time and probation for killing someone's dog last year

The Sedgwick County DA's office says 20-year-old Cole Carter was sentenced Monday to 12 months in jail followed by 12 months on probation. He previously pleaded guilty to felony counts of animal cruelty and criminal threat along with a misdemeanor count of carrying a weapon.

Wichita police responded in December to a suspicious character report near 29th and Ridge Road. It was reported to police that Cole slammed a small white dog onto the ground and fled the area.

Officers arrived in the area and found Carter driving a vehicle with two 16-year-old passengers. Police also found a concealed gun and a dead dog nearby.

The dog owner said their pup was a 13-year-old Bichon-Maltese mix named Benji. He weighed just 13 pounds.

Carter was also ordered to pay a $500 fine and another $569 in restitution to the dog's owner.
