Kansas sex offender accused of indecent liberties with a child

GREAT BEND, Kan. (KAKE) -

Police in central Kansas have arrested a 34-year-old convicted sex offender for indecent liberties with a child.

Nicholas Schwerdtfeger was taken into custody on Wednesday and jailed on $1 million bond. Great Bend police say that earlier this month, a teenage girl told police and staff at the local middle school about an alleged sex offense that happened in September.

Police say the incident did not happen at Great Bend Middle School and that Schwerdtfeger is not a district employee.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to call the Great Bend Police Department at (620) 793-4120 or Crime Stoppers at (620) 792-1300.

Kansas Offender Registry records show Schwerdtfeger was convicted in 2008 of the attempted indecent solicitation of a 16-year-old girl and attempted aggravated sexual battery of a 20-year-old woman. Those convictions were in Barton County. He also has multiple Kingman County convictions of voluntary sexual intercourse with a child, according to KDOC records.
