I-70 reopened after ice and snow force closure

GOODLAND, Kan. (KAKE) -

Icy conditions in Western Kansas led Kansas transportation officials to close I-70 from the Goodland exit to the Kansas-Colorado state line Wednesday morning.

Snow and ice is covering roads across most of northwestern Kansas and the results of several traffic accidents were captured on camera by KAKE Meteorologist Tony Laubach. He reported a rollover accident about 10 miles south of Goodland on K-27 and a jackknifed semi truck along I-70 Tuesday. As of Wednesday at 6:00 am, just over 1 inch of snow and freezing mist had accumulated in Goodland.

The interstate was later reopened, but despite the low snow totals, roads remain slick.

As of 5:00am MDT, Meteorologist Tony Laubach reported that Kansas State Troopers opened the westbound gates across I-70 at Goodland. The following photo is a look at the on ramp to westbound I-70 at Goodland.

KAKE Meteorologist Frank Waugh predicts a total snow accumulation of 1.5" - 4" to fall in that part of the state with the snow tapering off by the late morning hours.

Meanwhile, Wichita road crews have used the early morning hours to apply salt and sand to certain streets as the area prepares for potential freezing drizzle, likely after the early morning rush hour.
