Air quality concern after landfill fire near McPherson

Posted: Updated:
(KAKE) -

The McPherson Fire Department continues to monitor air quality after a fire at a landfill north of the city.

As of 5:15 a.m. Monday morning, the fire department said on Facebook that it wasn't detecting anything out of normal conditions.

It comes after windy conditions made a fire at a landfill just north of McPherson a nuisance to fight. Firefighters have been hard at work, battling the blaze since around early Sunday afternoon. As of Sunday evening, the fire continues to burn, spreading toxic substances in the smoke and into the sky. There are multiple agencies supporting the effort to put the fire out

Chief Wyssmann of the McPherson Fire Department reports that a plume model from the National Weather Service has indicated the City of McPherson will be directly affected by the smoke.  All residents were encouraged to do the following until at least 8 a.m. Monday morning:

1. Go inside

2. Close all windows and doors

3. Stay tuned to Radio/TV/Social Media for further updates.

4. Please utilize 911 for emergencies only. Please contact McPherson Fire Department administrative lines at 620-245-2505 if you have further questions or concerns.
