A baby boy defied the odds against him after waking up from a five-day coma and smiling at his father.

WOFL reports that in March, Michael Labuschagne was hospitalized in the United Kingdom after suffering heart failure. He was just 14 weeks old. His parents, Stuart and Emma, said their son was gasping for air when he arrived in the emergency room.

The boy made it through the cardiac arrest, but he was in a coma. Then five days later, after doctors had told his parents that Michael may never regain consciousness, he opened his eyes and gave his dad a big toothless smile.

Doctors discovered that Michael's cardiac arrest was caused by a rare heart tumor known as cardiac fibroma.

"He currently has an internal pacemaker and defibrillator, but this has caused physical development delay and is currently at max threshold, which means it is not working as effectively as it should," Michael' family said on GoFundMe.

The family is raising money for Michael's upcoming surgery at a Boston hospital. They have raised about 32,000 euros, or about $35,400.
