Wichita approves rezoning for planned veteran neighborhood

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

A group helping homeless veterans in Wichita hit a milestone Tuesday.

The City of Wichita gave Passageways final approval for rezoning land where they plan to build "cottage houses" near Seneca and I-235. The group plans to build a neighborhood of at least 30 homes for veterans who need a place to stay.

"We have been working on this for the last two or three years," said Passageways co-founder Susan Moellinger. "To have this final stamp of approval from the city government is just amazing."

The group says the homes are more than temporary housing, since veterans will be given the option to stay and start paying rent after graduating the Passageways program.

"It's a very humbling experience," Moellinger said. "It's a very fulfilling experience. We are blessed every day by the veterans we serve."

The project near I-235 and Seneca will cost up to seven million dollars, and Passageways is still raising money. To donate or find volunteer opportunities, click here or visit www.passagewaysltd.org.
