9-year-old 'guardian angel' alerts family of house fire

ROSE HILL, Kan. (KAKE) -

A 9-year-old girl alerts her family of a fire that destroyed their house in Rose Hill.

"She's my little angel right now. She's definitely the guardian angel of the house," said Nathan Bieler of his daughter. "I have a belief that God woke her up to get everything going 'cause without that, I don't know what would've happened."

While Bieler was at work around 4:30 a.m., a fire broke out in their house on Ridgeway Road in Rose Hill.

"She noticed the nightlight had went out and went to tell my wife that the night light went out, but also noticed that none of the other lights were on. My wife quickly figured out that none of the lights are on and something was very, very wrong. (She) went into the hallway and noticed the flames that were starting to accumulate out in the hallway. (She) immediately picked up my son and got my other daughter and ran out of the house," said Bieler.

Fire investigators believe the fire started in the furnace and was contained within the walls of the house without detection from the working smoke alarms.

The fire spread from the bottom floors to the attic and roof of the house.

"We are very thankful and very surprised everyone made it out. It was a very close call," said Chief James Woydziak, Butler County Fire District 3.

The fire killed four of the five pets in the house. Two cats and two dogs did not survive, but a German Shepherd was rescued from the fire.

Bieler's wife, 3-year-old son, 5-year-old daughter, and 9-year-old daughter were not hurt.

"They're a wonderful family. Have just enjoyed the kids and both Nathan and Amber. It's hard when it's a first home for them," said Meggin Demoss, neighbor.

The family is leaning on their family, friends and faith at this time.

To help the Bieler family, you can contact their church at First United Pentecostal at (316) 529-0600.
