Athlete of the Week: Ty Berry

One of the best shooters in Kansas is taking his talents outside of the Sunflower State.

“I’m glad that I made that decision and got it out of the way early so that way I could focus on the season and getting some wins for my guys,” Berry told KAKE.

Ty Berry has offers from numerous power 5 schools. Last week he put the speculation to rest and announced his commitment to Northwestern.

“I think the coaching staff is really good,” Berry said. “They give me a chance to come in right away and make an impact right away and obviously academically they are really solid. I like that part as well.”

Berry, a Newton native, decided to transfer to Sunrise Christian Academy this summer, a school known for producing Division 1 basketball players at a high rate.

“It’s a crazy transition and I think that it’s going to help me a lot because I’m surrounded by these guys every day and everybody has the same goals and we’re pushing each other every day at practice to get better,” Berry said. “We all want to make it to the top.

The Buffaloes are primed for another successful season and believe Berry’s skillset makes them even more lethal.

“I’ve seen a lot of guys come through here and I think he shoots as good as anybody if not better than just about everybody,” said head coach, Luke Barnwell. “That plays in to just how good he is because he also uses it to his advantage. He’ll lift that ball and then he can go make plays with someone he bounces it to. You want to root for him. Kind of one of your guys that makes you want to say, ‘that’s one of our guys’.
