WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Wichita police say they've arrested a woman who allegedly tried to kidnap a 4-year-old girl from a department store.

Officers responded at around 1:15 p.m. Thursday to the report of a kidnapping at the Burlington Coat Factory near Kellogg and Rock Road. Police spokesperson Charley Davidson said the girl's mother reported that a woman approached. She asked the mom to call police, then grabbed the 4-year-old girl's arm and walked away.

"The woman quickly grabbed her daughter, left the store and called 911," Officer Davidson said. "Fortunately, the child was not injured."

Officers arrived and located the suspect, 30-year-old Jasmine Patterson, leaving the store and took her into custody. Patterson was booked for one count of kidnapping, jail records show.

Davidson said that during the investigation officers were informed that Patterson may have a mental disability that may have played a role in the incident.

The investigation is ongoing.

"Always be aware of where your children are, and be aware of your own surroundings as well," Davidson said. "If you feel something's unsafe or something is suspicious, you can always contact management at the store to help address the situation. Or if it's something that needs police response, you can always call 911."
