Authorities say they have arrested a 16-year-old Salina student who brought a handgun to school on Thursday.

Capt. Paul Forrester with the Salina Police Department said administrators and Salina Central High School received information that a student was in possession of a firearm. When administration confronted the teen, he ran from the school but was apprehended a few blocks away.

Officers searched the area where the student was taken into custody and found a 9mm pistol, Forrester said. The gun was reported stolen by a family member after being contacted by the Salina Police Department.

The student was transported to a juvenile facility in Junction City and charged with criminal use of a weapon, criminal carrying of a weapon, interference with law enforcement, battery, theft of a firearm and a probation violation.

Police say there is no indication that he threatened anyone.

"This is an example how seeing something and then saying something to authorities helps keep our communities and schools safe," Forrester said.
