HUTCHINSON, Kan. (KAKE) -

Hutchinson police say a man has been found dead after a standoff that led to lockdowns at three schools.

Officers responded at around 10 a.m. Wednesday to a disturbance involving a possible suicidal person in the 700 block of East 10th Street. Capt. Thad Pickard said three gunshots were heard from inside the home prior to their arrival.

Police set up and perimeter and attempted unsuccessfully to contact the person inside the home.

"Due to circumstances, a decision was made to evacuate the immediate area and lock down the area schools as the public's safety is our priority," Capt. Pickard said.

Hutchinson High School, McCandless Elementary and Faris Elementary schools were also placed on a soft lockdown, which means outside doors were locked, but classes continued.

Members of the Emergency Response Team were called to the scene and made entry into the home. Inside, they found man dead of an apparent gunshot wound to the chest.

The investigation is ongoing.

Hutchinson police asked people to avoid the 700 block East of 10th. The area will remain closed off to the public while they investigate.
