Team of the Week: Derby Panthers

DERBY, Kan. (KAKE) -

Derby and Bishop Carroll have been meeting on the gridiron for the last four years. It may be a new rivalry, but these programs have already reaped the rewards.

"That's why we play this game. We play this game to get both teams better. They're on the quest for a 5A state championship and were on a quest for a 6A state championship," said Derby high school football coach Brandon Clark. "This is just part of the journey."

This season both teams came into this contest with high scoring offenses but also stingy defenses.

"I mean we had a game plan kind of went out the window after the first drive," said Derby quarterback Grant Adler. "They're a lot better defense than we've faced. I mean I give a lot of credit to them, they did a lot of different things that maybe we weren't expecting and weren't ready for."

Despite the Panthers being caught off guard, they managed to score two touchdowns in the first half and took a 14-0 lead to the locker room.

"I'd like to think we could play a little better but we kept shooting ourselves in the foot, you know," said Clark. "We would get a five yard penalty and it started with the first series."

Derby's defense shut down the Golden Eagles' offense. The panthers only allowed 132 yards of offense and kept Bishop Carroll off the scoreboard in their 21-0 victory.

"I mean they were huge for us," said Adler.  "When it's zero points, you have a lot more confidence on offense so, i mean, a lot of that's to them. I give them a ton of credit."

The win moves Derby to 4-0. As well as they've played through 4 weeks, the panthers believe they still have some untapped potential.

"I'll tell you what I really like is how our defense is coming along. We had to fill about 7 spots and our D-Line is anchoring it," said Clark. "They're a lot of the older guys. Those juniors are coming along at linebacker and our secondary is doing a great job too."
