Severe storms and flooding possible in KAKEland

Posted: Updated:
WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Scattered showers and storms expected across Western and North Central Kansas ahead of an approaching cold front. Storms today in North Central Kansas could turn severe with high wind gusts possible.

Tuesday starts off with scattered showers and thunderstorms mainly across Western Kansas. While some thunder is expected Tuesday morning, conditions are such that these storms should remain below severe criteria. As a cold front meanders east, the showers and storms will slide into an environment more favorable for severe weather.

Temperatures in North Central Kansas will climb into the mid to upper 80s and this heat will help destabilize the atmosphere by mid to late afternoon. Storms after 5pm could be severe in North Central Kansas and this threat will continue into the evening and overnight as the storms track east. The most likely threat will be high wind gusts that could top 65mph. In addition to wind flooding rain and some hail to the size of quarters can be expected. The tornado threat at this point and time looks very low in KAKEland.

Some rain and thunderstorm activity will be possible this evening into the overnight in Wichita but it is not expected to be severe and will likely be very spotty. Better rain chances will roll into South Central Kansas and Wichita tomorrow as the cold front slides through during the late afternoon and evening.

With several rounds of rain on the menu through the end of the week, flooding remains a concern across KAKEland. A flood watch is in effect through Wednesday evening for much of North Central, South Central and Southwest Kansas. Flooded roads should be avoided at all costs and water levels should be monitored closely if you live in a flood prone area of KAKEland.
