INDEPENDENCE, Kan. (KAKE) -

A bolt of lightning struck and killed an Andover man during a distance run in southeast Kansas.

The Montgomery County Chronicle reports 33-year-old Thomas Stanely was struck by lightning as he approached the finish of a 50K race at Elk City Lake on Saturday.

Stanley was competing in the FlatRock 50K and 25K, which is an annual long-distance endurance race at Elk City Lake.

Stanley was the director of business initiatives at the Kansas Leadership Center, according to his staff biography. He was also a board member of Run Wichita.

As of Monday morning, a GoFundMe has raised nearly $42,000 for the Stanley family.
