WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Wichita police say an 8-year-old girl has died after a crash on the west side Thursday evening.

The accident happened just after 6:45 p.m. at Taft and West Street. Officer Paul Cruz said a maroon Lincoln Navigator turned left from West, onto Taft, in front of a white Jeep SUV. The Lincoln overturned, ejecting the girl.

The child suffered critical injuries and died at a local hospital. Her grandmother identified her as Kiya Dawn Johnson.

"...we are struggling like nothing I have never known," she said on Facebook. "Our princess is gone and our world shattered."

Cruz said that after the Lincoln overturned, it collided with a white Dodge Challenger at the stop light.

There were six people in the Lincoln:  Kiya, a 2-year-old girl, a 5-year-old girl, a 5-year-old boy, a 33-year-old woman and the driver, a 32-year-old woman.

Cruz said a 28-year-old man was driving the Jeep and a 39-year-old man was driving the Challenger.

The driver of the Jeep was the only person not transported to the hospital.

Police are investigating the crash, including whether alcohol was involved.    The Wichita Police Department encourages anyone who witnessed the crash to contact the WPD Accident Follow-Up section at (316) 350-3685.
