Wins for Kansas: Bekah and Friends Foundation

A Kansas cancer support network helps families affected by childhood cancer. They’re able to do so, because they understand what it's like.

"Bekah and Friends Foundation is the living embodiment of my daughter Bekah,” says Kristen Crowe-Merritt.

She was diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer at age fourteen. And even in the midst of her battle, her mom Kristen knew she wanted to do something that would keep Bekah's spirit alive.

"Sixteen days after her passing, I launched and I’ve been going ever since,” says Crowe-Merritt.

So, they send Bekah Buddies all across the country. It's a packet of goodies that help keep a child’s mind busy and off of their hospital stay.

"You would be surprised at what a coloring book can do."

But that's not all. They help with bills that pile up while parents take off work. Even gas cards for families who have to travel to nearby states for treatment.

"It's the little things that make the big difference because those are the things they're going to stress about the most."

Now seven years after Bekah's passing, Kristen knows her daughter's spirit of kindness lives on.

"I think she'd be proud. She wanted to help the kids. And that's what we've done."

To help with their mission, KAKE TV and our partners, DeVaughn James Injury Lawyers are honored to them as this week's, “Wins for Kansas.”
