A man who was beaten up in northeast Wichita has now died from his injuries, and his suspected attacker faces murder charges.

Haley Collins was hospitalized for weeks, after he was injured in a fight in a parking lot on the northeast corner of 21st St N and Rock Road. That fight happened around 2 a.m. August 21st, and Collins died from his injuries Thursday, September 5.

Collins, a 33-year-old man from Bel Aire, is being remembered as a "helper." Aubree Hawkins said she worked with Collins for about 14 years at different jobs, and he had a "contagious smile you would always remember."

"He was like the nicest person you'd ever meet," Hawkins said. "Protector. If you ever had a problem, he was there. Smiled all the time."

Police reports show 35-year-old Steven Speakman was suspected of being drunk when he started hitting Collins August 21.

"The investigation revealed an argument ensued between acquaintances Speakman and Collins, when Speakman physically battered Collins, causing his life-threatening injuries," said Wichita Police spokesperson, Officer Charley Davidson.

"Haley was a great guy," Hawkins said. "He didn't deserve this. He would have never hurt Steven, ever. He was more of a helper for Steven, you know. He would never hurt anybody, let alone somebody he called his friend."

Hawkins said she knows Collins's family is heartbroken.

"I pray for his family, you know," Hawkins said. "His only brother, aunts, grandparents, his girlfriend... and all of his friends, he has so many friends, it's crazy."

Speakman had been arrested for battery charges after the fight August 21, but he now faces first-degree murder charges. Police say the case is still under investigation and will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office.

Police say a man who was beaten in the parking lot of a Dillons grocery store in northeast Wichita over two weeks ago has died and a suspect has been arrested in his death.

Officers responded at around 2 a.m. on Wednesday, August 21 to a disturbance in the 2200 block of North Rock Road. They arrived to find 33-year-old Haley Collins unconscious and with critical injuries.

Police spokesperson Charley Davidson said 35-year-old Steven Speakman allegedly battered Collins during an argument in the Dillons parking lot at 21st and Rock.

Officers arrested Speakman at the scene and booked him for aggravated battery. Collins, of Bel Aire, died at a local hospital on Thursday, and Speakman now faces a charge of first-degree murder. He remains held without bond.
