Kansas State Fair begins in Hutchinson Friday

The 2019 Kansas State Fair begins Friday and runs through September 16th. A quiet intensity filled the fairgrounds Thursday, much like the last day of prep before any huge event.

This year, fair goers can check out a few new things, from an outdoor circus, to honey bun hamburgers, to live events at the equine barn. Most of what you remember and expect from the fair will be here for you, starting Friday.

This is the first year running the fair for general manager Robin Jennison, and he said he's not rushing in to make any major changes. Your tired feet might notice one difference from last year. The trams are back.

“It was really kind of a difficult decision last year when they stopped it, and that is the biggest complaint I heard about the fair when I came onboard about a week later," Jennison said.

The general manager said a new app for the fair will include maps, schedules, and notifications for live events.

“The biggest new thing is our app," Jennison said. "We’re very excited about the app. It’s the Kansas State Fair. It’s really a vibrant app. I was up at the Iowa State Fair, ours works much better than theirs does."

One of the new events this year is an outdoor circus, the "Fearless Flores Circus and Thrill Show, including the "Legendary Globe of Death."

"It’s a 14 foot steel cage that we’re gonna put motorcycles in, race around, have some fun with that," said performer Volorian Flores. He and his eight year old sister, Ziana, will hop on their motorcycles and ride around that cage. They're third generation circus performers from Sarasota, Florida, and they said they're looking forward to the fair.

“I’m excited to see what it brings, see how many people get to come out, watch the show, and perform for the beautiful people of Kansas," Flores said.

The general manager said beer fans will get to enjoy live entertainment, since they're moving the beer garden to Lake Talbott. You can check out live events throughout the fair.

“There will be people that may not come this year that wish they would’ve, when they see what the entertainers are gonna do this year," Jennison said.

During the fair, you'll be able to get your traditional fair food, check out the Midway, and see grandstand concerts like Billy Currington, Skillet, and Hanson.
