Wichita Fire Department teams up with local organization to host hygiene drive

It's easy to take every-day items like soap and deodorant for granted, but there families in the Wichita community that can't afford basic items. Giving the Basics is working to change that.

Through September 15, the organization is teaming up with The Wichita Fire Department to host the Dignity Drive.

Organization leaders encourage people to donate items like soap, shampoo, and feminine hygiene products.

Erin Kalkbrenner with Giving the Basics explains that there are thousands of families who go without the items they need here in the Wichita community.

"Regardless of the situation that you're in, and regardless of who you are or where you came from, you should have the capacity to have these items to keep yourself clean and to hopefully keep yourself moving forward in society," said Kalkbrenner.

This reality can make each day a challenge.  Kalkbrenner said this issue directly affects school attendance, noting that it's hard for students to focus when they aren't clean, confident, or lack personal care or feminine hygiene products they need.

"Imagine a day going without toilet paper or without a toothbrush, or going a week without deodorant, that's just really difficult for anyone to grasp who hasn't been in that situation."

Donations can be dropped off at any of the city's 22 fire stations.
