Wichita police identify woman killed in head-on crash

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Wichita police are investigating what caused a 30-year-old woman to veer into oncoming traffic and collide with an oncoming car.

The crash happened at around 8:20 p.m. Sunday on near 21st and 119th streets on the northwest side. Emergency crews arrived to find a Nissan Xterra and Hyundai Elantra had collided head-on just west of the intersection.

The driver of the Nissan, Kaitlin Whelan, died at the scene. The 24-year-old woman driving the Hyundai suffered serious injuries and remained in the hospital on Tuesday.

Officer Charley Davidson said Whelan was heading westbound when her vehicle crossed the center line and struck the Hyundai. 

It was the 20th fatality crash in Wichita this year. The investigation is ongoing.

A supervisor with Sedgwick County Emergency Dispatch said the crash was reported just after 8 p.m. Sunday west of 119th St W on 21st St N.

A woman in her 30s died in the crash, and a woman in her 20s was taken to a hospital.

Two vehicles involved in the crash had front-end damage. KAKE News is reaching out to emergency responders for more information on this fatal wreck.
