The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Department says the public shouldn't forget the sacrifice of one of it's deputies. A wanted felon shot and killed Deputy Robert Kunze in September of 2018. Lake Afton was a special place for Deputy Kunze. Some campers tell us he would even spend some of his off-days here fishing. Now, the county wants help renaming the updated recreational area and some say, the name Robert Kunze would be a perfect fit.

A small lake, with a big meaning. A tribute to Deputy Robert Kunze, who spent hours patrolling Lake Afton every week. Lt. Tim Myers hopes the city will honor his friend, "I think that would make me personally very happy. I can't speak for the entire sheriff's office, but I believe most of the members would also be very happy with that."

Sedgwick County asked it's Facebook followers to suggest a name for the former Judge Riddell Boys Ranch. Since last Friday, an overwhelming amount of support from the community for Deputy Kunze. One person saying, "he deserves to have his name and life memorialized and celebrated at Lake Afton."

"That's where he rode and I think it would mean a lot to Deputy Kunze's family and to the sheriff's office if they were to select that name," says Lt. Myers.

Many campers at Lake Afton told KAKE News they remember Deputy Kunze coming around the campsites every morning. He became like part of their family. "He patrolled this a lot when we were coming out here. It would probably make his family feel real good."

The sheriff's department shared on Facebook, "we can't think of a better name, can you?" Lt. Myers tells the community, "thank you" for supporting the legacy of Deputy Kunze, "he got to know the citizens very well, the business owners on that beat, so i think that he would be very appreciative if they were to name it after him."

The updates here include a refurbished baseball and softball diamond and two new basketball courts. The final decision will be made by Sedgwick County this Friday, just in time for labor day weekend.
