1st and 10 Preview: Derby Panthers

The Derby Panthers are the epitome of success of high school football here in Kansas.

They've been to the 6A state championship game in five of the last six seasons and have come home with the hardware four times during this run.

The Panthers are aiming to reload in 2019.

They have 4 starters back on defense and lost most of their linebackers and secondary to graduation.

Offensively they return their top weapon, running back Tre Washington along with quarterback Grant Adler.

Derby may be young in some areas, but the expectations for the panthers remain the same.

"We've got to be the most disciplined team on the field," said head coach Brandon Clark. "We talk to our kids all the time that's not just physically, that's emotionally and you know mentally. If we can take care of those three things and have some fun while we're doing it, it'll be fun on Friday night."

"I think we just have a lot of competitors and we don't want to lose and when you live in a town like this you can't really lose or you're going to get some backlash," Washington said with a laugh. "I think it's just a mixture of competitiveness and having that Derby on your chest and knowing that what comes with it. Last year the defense was mostly the leaders with Jackson and all them so they were more vocal and now we're more of the vocal ones I would say. "
