11-year-old struck by semi near Garden City

GARDEN CITY, Kan. (AP) -

An 11-year-old boy has been injured after being struck by a semi while riding his bike near Garden City. 

The incident happened around 5:45 p.m. on Friday. The Kansas Highway Patrol says the boy was riding his bike southbound on the walkway portion of a bridge on mile post 1.9 on Business 83.

Witnesses say they saw the bicycle drive off the bike path, causing the boy to fall out into the northbound lane of the road. A semi traveling northbound struck the boy with its passenger side and stopped to render aid. 

The 11-year-old was transported to a Wichita hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the semi did not report any injuries.
