1st and 10 Preview: Wichita Northwest

The Wichita Northwest Grizzlies had a lot to be happy about in 2018.

They were an offensive juggernaut, averaging more than 55 points per game but they would fall just short in the 5A state championship game.

The Grizzlies graduated a bunch of talent from that team. Including Marcus Hicks who is now at Oklahoma and Breece Hall at Iowa State.

Despite those losses the Grizzles have all the talent to once again be one of the best teams in 5A.

Reagan Jones should once again light up the City League. The senior quarterback just committed to Missouri Western State, and last year he had more than 3,000 total yards and had 51 touchdowns.

One of the keys for Steve Martin's successful run has been Northwest's ability to reload rather than rebuild.

"Our guys have been able to develop and stuff like that. We really on our freshman and our JV staff to get on Friday nights. We preach that all of the time and our coaches do a remarkable job of doing that. So by the time those guys are juniors and seniors they're hungry," said Martin. "Our running backs have a big task with Breece going to Iowa State but Julius Bolden, Jamar Martin and Jaden Wheeler are filling the shoes right now, and we'll see what we got."

"I'm for sure ready to get back out here and I know all of the boys are ready to get out here and all of the new guys coming up," said Jones. "Really last year we had a great year but we are just going to keep building and making this culture right, so I'm really excited for it."

Wichita Northwest opens up the season on September 6th against Bishop Carroll.
