ANDOVER, Kan. (KAKE) -

The Andover Police Department has announced the passing of their oldest K-9.

Thor was a male Belgian Malinois who would have turned 10 years old in September. Andover police say Thor died on Saturday, after a brief illness. He was scheduled to retire in a few weeks.

Thor successfully completed his 10-week Patrol Dog and Drug Search training at the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office in 2011. He was a dual purpose K-9 trained in both drug detection and patrol tactics.

The department says Thor loved going to schools and community events to perform demonstrations.

“Thor was a phenomenal dog, and I truly believe that he was one of the finest Police K-9’s in the State, both for Drug work and Police work. He will be very missed,” said Andover Police Chief Mike Keller.

Andover officers will be wearing the black band of mourning through this Saturday. A memorial tribute is also being planned for 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 28th at the Amphitheater in Central Park.
