WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Wichita police say they arrested two people on suspicion of driving under the influence and other charges after they crashed into patrol vehicles in separate incidents on Saturday.

The first happened at around 2:15 a.m. on West Kellogg. An officer responded to the report of a wrong-way driver at Kellogg and Maize and observed a white Ford F-350 heading east in the westbound lanes.

Police spokesperson Charley Davidson said the officer avoided a head-on collision, but his patrol vehicle was struck. The pickup then then hit the center median at Kellogg and Meridian before coming to a stop.

The officer was taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Police arrested 58-year-old James Johnson for aggravated battery, his 3rd DUI, hit and run, driving the wrong way on a one-way and driving on an expired license. He remained jailed Monday on $20,000 bond.

The second incident happened at around 10:50 p.m. on Hydraulic under the I-135 overpass. Davidson said officers were working an accident and had the southbound lanes blocked when a white BMW driven by 37-year-old Lesster Raudales-Varela struck a patrol vehicle and a Ford Taurus.

Officers stopped Raudales-Varela a short time later and arrested him for DUI, careless driving and transporting an open container. He did not appear in Sedgwick County Jail records Monday morning.

No one was hurt in that incident.
