HOISINGTON, Kan. (KAKE) -

The Kansas Highway Patrol says distracted driving led to a fatal wreck in Barton County on Friday.

The accident happened just before 5:30 p.m. on Friday. 84-year-old Lee Depperschmidt was stopped about 1.5 miles northwest of Hoisington on U-281 with a passenger, 78-year-old Ida John. They were waiting to make a left turn onto a private driveway.

25-year-old Ashley Bowles was driving behind Deppershmidt but "was distracted by her cellphone" and rear-ended Deppershmidt's vehicle.

Deppershmidt's vehicle spun out, landing in the front yard. Bowles' vehicle was sent into the north ditch and came to a rest in a wheat field.

John was killed from injuries sustained in the wreck and Deppershmidt was seriously injured.

Bowles did not have any apparent injuries.
