WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

A WWII veteran who survived the infamous Bataan Death March in 1942 has died, his granddaughter says.

Eddie Graham, of Wichita, would have turned 102 years old on September 5.

"With great sadness, we would like to inform you Eddie Graham, a true American hero, a brother, a father, an uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend has gone to be with the Lord," Graham's granddaughter told KAKE News.

In World War II, Graham was captured by the Japanese and forced to march for miles. He was held by the Japanese as a prisoner of war until the end of the war.

"It means a lot to me to serve the country, cause it was my time to go there," told KAKE during his 100th birthday celebration in 2017.

The family said more information would be in Graham's obituary this weekend.
