Victim identified in Hamilton Co. drowning

The body of a man has been recovered in Sam’s Pond – near Syracuse, Kan.

Before 2 p.m. Tuesday, 911 got a call about a man who went underwater and never resurfaced, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office.

People tried to rescue the man, but they were not able to. The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks and Scuba Ventures Safety Services of Liberal Kansas were called in and they located the victim, Joaquin Vazquez Hernandez, of Syracuse.

Hernandez, 23, was found before 6 p.m., with the help of sonar equipment.


A body has has been recovered after a drowning in Hamilton County. 

Kansas Wildlife, Parks & Tourism- Game Wardens said they had been working a drowning at Sam's Pond near Syracuse. A body was recovered.
