WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Wichita police say they've arrested a 16-year-old boy who was firing a handgun and injuring a 7-year-old girl.

Officers responded shortly before 11:30 a.m. Monday to the report of a shooting in the 700 block of South Laura, near Kellogg and Washington. Police spokesperson Charley Davidson said officers arrived to find the girl who had a minor injury to one of her fingers.

Officers learned that the girl was playing in her backyard when she heard two loud bangs and her finger was struck by "some type of projectile," Officer Davidson said. A juvenile with an object in his hand was then seen retreating back into the home next door.

"As officers approached the next door home, a male exited armed with a silver handgun," Davidson said. "Verbal instructions were given by officers to this male who then retreated again back into the home."

Officers were able to contact those inside by phone and all, an adult and four juveniles, exited without further incident. Davidson said the teen suspect does not live at the home.

The teen was booked into juvenile detention of aggravated battery, criminal possession of a firearm by a juvenile, obstruction and an outstanding warrant. Police believe he was shooting at some type of target when the girl was struck.
