Reno County students get free back-to-school haircuts

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (KAKE) -

With back to school just around the corner, expenses for many families can really start adding up, so students at the Hutchinson Community College Cosmetology school wanted to give kids one less thing to worry about.

"I'm not as hot anymore. It isn't covering my eyeballs anymore. It feels very much better. I feel cooler and fresh,” said Gavin, a middle school student, after getting his fresh cut.

He and hundreds of Reno county students are being treated to free hair cuts for the third year in a row.

"Right at 9 we had a line halfway through the parking lot, and they've had people constantly so they're just now getting a break. We still have people waiting. It's been awesome,” said Alex Hass, the Cosmetology Coordinator.

Alice Thomas was there with her 3 grandchildren. She says because haircuts are expensive, without this program she might not be able to afford it.

"This is our second year doing this. It's just amazing, you have a kid come in and they're sitting there and pretty soon you see this big smile on their face and how good they look to have their hair freshly cut for free is really awesome,” said Alice.

Hass said that while she loves seeing so many smiling faces, her goal is to leave an impression on her students that will last much longer than just a day.

"Part of my job is to help our students, so what I want to instill in them is to continue doing these kinds of things and come back in the future and next year be our volunteers… So it's great. It's a really nice thing to do for our community," said Hass.

Her hope is that every kid who hopped out of the chairs would leave feeling like a million bucks.
