Wichita alternative school struck by lightning during morning storm

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Fire officials say an Wichita alternative school was evacuated after the building was struck by lightning Thursday morning.

Crews responded at just before 9 a.n. to the report of a possible fire at Gateway Alternative Program Center in the 2300 block of West 15th Street, near Meridian.

The Wichita Fire Department says lightning struck the building, causing electrical damage to the HVAC system. The building was evacuated because of the smell of electrical smoke.

There were teachers inside but no kids.
