13-year-old boy charged in teen's shooting death in Olathe

Authorities have charged a 13-year-old boy in connection to the shooting death of a 14-year-old in Olathe, Kansas. 

KCTV reports the suspect, whose name hasn't been released, was charged Friday with second-degree murder in the death of Zavier Mendoza. The case is currently being handled in juvenile court. 

Officers responded Thursday afternoon to a disturbance in the 12500 block of South Constance Street. They found Mendoza dead of a gunshot wound. 

The suspect was originally reported to be 14 years old.

Olathe police say a teenager is in custody in connection with the shooting death of a 14-year-old boy. 

Spokesman Joel Yeldell says officers were called about 2:15 a.m. Thursday to investigate a disturbance in the 12500 block of South Constance Street. 

Emergency responders found the teen dead of an apparent gunshot wound. He was identified as Zavier Mendoza. 

Olathe police said on Twitter just before 11 a.m. that a suspect, who is also 14 years old, was taken into custody. 

No further information was released and the homicide investigation continues.
