CHARLOTTE, N.C. (KAKE) -

Police in North Carolina say a woman left her three children in a hot car while she applied for a job this week.

The incident happened Tuesday at an office building in Charlotte as temperatures reached into the upper 80s. WSOC reports an employee called 911 after spotting the children in the car.

The children are 5 months, 2 years, and 4 years old.

"I just think it was a bad situation," witness Jackie Pennie told the Charlotte ABC affiliate. "It was just irresponsible, totally, on her part."

She said she saw police and paramedics arrive on scene and take the children into an ambulance. It's unclear how long they were in the vehicle, but they were not hurt.

A maintenance employee went through the office building to find the 27-year-old mother. She was cited for neglect.
