Capital One data breach: protecting your credit

Posted: Updated:
WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

This time, it’s Capital One and you don’t even have to be a customer. You could’ve just applied for their credit card to be one of 106 million people whose data was compromised.

“That’s a lot of people,” said Denise Groene with the Kansas Better Business Bureau. “A lot of information that’s out there. As a consumer you need to be diligent.”

Yet again, places like the Better Business Bureau are sounding an alarm and credit counselors like Jeff Witherspoon said the hacks happen fast.

“These dark webs, where people are buying and selling information, it’s a pretty scary place and you’ve got to stay on top of your situation,” said Witherspoon, with Consumer credit Counseling Service, said.

In terms of scope – Capital One is one of the top seven largest hacks.

And the Capital One breach came hours before the Federal Trade Commission issued warnings about Equifax – or rather the scammers creating nearly identical sites to take advantage of potential victims.

They’re calling, too.

“If you receive a phone call from someone trying to walk you through the process, that’s another red flag that you’re dealing with a scammer,” Groene said.

If your information was hacked – experts recommend:

  • Filing a police report
  • Freeze your credit
  • Monitor your credit
