DODGE CITY, Kan. (KAKE) -

A Dodge City woman who worked as tax preparer has pleaded guilty to filing false income tax returns for her clients.

A news release from U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister said 48-year-old Maria R. Garcia admitted to filing numerous tax returns from  2013- 2015 that had false statements. As a result, Garcia's clients received larger refunds than what they were owed.

The total loss to the IRA was determined to be more than $101,700.

Garcia pleaded guilty to one count of preparing tax returns containing false statements. Garcia's plea agreement calls for her to pay the full amount in restitution and to be permanently prohibited from working as a tax preparer.

She faces up to three years in federal prison and a fine of up to $100,000.
