FD: Fire in Delano caused by demolition work

Posted: Updated:

Fire crews rushed to a partially-demolished building in Delano early Friday night.

Witnesses said there was thick, black smoke from a site near Sycamore and Douglas. Fire investigators said construction crews hit some debris while trying to clear the rest of the site.

"I went to go talk to the operator of the back hoe and he was like, 'Maybe I should call the fire department,'" said Brian Eastridge.

Crews said it took less than an hour to put the fire out, some of those construction crews helped remove debris to make sure the fire was completely extinguished.

"They were all in their heavy equipment and they just backed away, which is the right procedure," said Sid Newby, Batallion Chief.

No one was at risk of being hurt, despite the intense flames seen from blocks away.

"It was pretty crazy, especially so close to the buildings around here," Easton Thompson, another witness, said. "Pretty interesting to see."
