WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Ten people are safe after a fire broke out at a southeast Wichita home Friday morning.

Crews responded at around 5:30 a.m. to a fire in the 1400 block of East Mt. Vernon, near Southeast Boulevard. The family with six kids were able to escape before firefighters arrived on scene.

Fire Marshal Stuart Bevis said the fire was centered around a kitchen and garage area and prevented three kids in the basement from being able to escape through doors. The parents and a relative got them out through windows.

"Honestly, I just wanted my kids out and safe," the mother said. "That was my main concern, my main priority. The rest of it, figure it out as I go."

Bevis said, "We hate it when we lose property, but life is number one. And we really want people to remember to check and to have working smoke alarms in their homes, to check them regularly."

The family's three cats were rescued, but their dog died in the fire. A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family.
