Wins for Kansas: Heart to Heart Child Advocacy

Heart to Heart Child Advocacy Center serves abused kids in Harvey, Marion and McPherson county.

"We basically help shape the community response to child abuse," says executive director Laura Kelly.

They work with educators, investigators, police and mental health professionals to come together to put the child at the center and meet their needs.

"That's everything from identifying abuse, to stopping it, treating it and prosecuting it,” says Kelly.

They serve about 200 children a year, but they know there are so many others that need their help.

"We have national research that shows one in seven children will be victims of child abuse in any given year and one in ten will be sexually abused before their eighteenth birthday. So, the need is really great."

Their biggest advice for someone asking how they can help...

"The very most important thing they can do actually is to report any suspicion of abuse. A lot of times people will say, ‘Well what if I’m wrong?’ And my response to that is, ‘But what if you're right?’ We need to make sure those kids get the help that they need as quickly as we can get it to them."

To help with their mission, KAKE TV and our partners DeVaughn James Injury Lawyers are honored to them as this week's, “Wins for Kansas.”
