Wichita restaurant owner killed in shooting was targeted, police say

Wichita police say they believe a local restaurant owner who was shot and killed Friday night was targeted.

Officers were called at around 10 p.m. to the 2100 block of West Columbine, near 25th and North Amidon. Family and friends of Neighbors Bar and Grill owner Chuck Giles say he was shot and killed in his driveway.

Wichita police confirmed his identity on Monday.

Capt. Brent Allred said Giles was shot numerous times and died at the scene.

"Based on the information we have, we believe that Mr. Giles left his place of business, arrived as his residence, when the suspect or suspects approached him, fired several rounds and removed some money from him," Capt. Allred said.

Allred said police believe Giles was targeted for robbery, but investigators aren't sure if he was followed to his home.

A woman who lives in Giles' neighborhood said she heard police, and her neighbors, trying to figure out what happened, and she has not seen anything like this in the neighborhood before.

"Never. No. I have grandchildren, and they're normally out playing in the yard. Doing things that little 2-year-olds do. But no, nothing has ever transpired to that magnitude," said Alicia Shaw, Giles' neighbor, "Anything could happen in anybody's neighborhood. It's a very peaceful, family oriented neighborhood. But even with that. I've foreseen things happen, and I think you have to stay vigilant."

No arrests have been made. Anyone with information is asked to call the WPD homicide section at (316) 268-4181 or Crime Stoppers at (316) 267-2111.

Giles' death was Wichita's 15th criminal homicide of 2019.
