Woman accused of sexually abusing children at day care sentenced to 30 days

Posted: Updated:

An Ohio woman accused of sexually abusing multiple children under 5 years old at her unlicensed day care will spend 30 days in jail after a plea deal.

WSYX reports 51-year-old Kimberly Hignite, of Grove City, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor counts of endangering children and was sentenced Monday. She will also have to pay a $4200 fine.

Hignite was indicted last year on five counts of gross sexual imposition and 17 counts of child endangerment. Prosecutors say she ran day care out of her home and had 23 children in her care at the time of the indictment.

She was accused of touching children in their private areas and having two of the kids touch each other. Children were also allegedly strapped to car seats, deprived of food and water, and forced to take sleep medication.

One parent said she filed a complaint with the state years earlier after her toddler was hurt when he had a potty training accident. She said when she picked him up, the boy had a busted lip, a mouth full of blood, and was just wearing a t-shirt with no underwear or diaper.

She said she was told Hignite threw a shoe at him.
