WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

A 32-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and other charges after Wichita police say he crashed his SUV into an apartment.

The crash happened around 1:15 a.m. Wednesday in the 6700 block of West Shade Lane, near Central and Ridge. Officer Charley Davidson said police arriving on scene found Martel Yarbrough's Jeep Cherokee in the apartment and smelled a strong odor of natural gas.

The fire department assisted in stopping the leak and evacuating the apartment building. A mother and daughter in the apartment were not hurt.

Davidson said Yarbrough was driving east on Shade Lane when he left the roadway and struck the building. He was arrested for DUI, battery of a law enforcement office, obstruction and inattentive driving.

The investigation is ongoing.
